What Became of the Boats from the Nydam Moor?
The largely intact oak boat from the Nydam Moor was kept in storage in the attic of the Flensburg Grammar School throughout the war. The pine vessel, recovered in the presence of King Frederik VII, was covered with peat and left on a meadow close to the excavation site. During the war, it was destroyed on site by Prussian troops.
Engelhardt in Copenhagen
Following the circumstances that forced Engelhardt to flee to his native city, he remained there and carried out further excavations in Jutland, on Funen, and on Zealand. He published his research and attended international congresses. As a professor and honorary doctor of the University of Copenhagen, he supported a new generation of scholars and continued to shape Scandinavian archaeology until his death in 1881.
