The Only One of Its Kind
This mask is unique in the Germanic world. Its prototypes can be found in the ceremonial masks of the Roman army.
This object, too, was severely damaged and deformed before it was deposited. Today, only traces of this remain to indicate this—because shortly after its discovery, attempts were made to restore the mask to its original shape.

Behind the Mask
This object consists of silver and gold sheets. The decorations suggest that it once belonged to the mask. The strips were found separately and show signs of destruction. The current appearance is the result of a reconstruction attempt from Engelhardt’s time. Recent studies show that the object originally had an elongated shape and was attached to the mask in such a way that it covered the entire back of the head.
