The Last shirt    Here we see the back of the tunic. Near the left shoulder, a small, hemmed hole stands out. A shoulder strap for the quiver or sword belt might have been buttoned here. Functional riding attire    The trousers resemble those worn by riders in the Roman Empire in terms of cut and weaving techniques. Fibulae from Near and Far    These fibulae belonged to women’s attire. Whilst the large fibulae are indigenous designs from the first century, the small ones are significantly younger. Invisible Inscription    This fragment of a shield boss bears a runic inscription on the side not visible here. When mounted, it was therefore hidden. Such “invisible” inscriptions are not uncommon. A Name in Runes    This sword scabbard fitting bears runic inscriptions on both sides. On the side visible here, the inscription reads “owlthuthewar.” This is interpreted as the male name “Wulthuthewar.” The rune o precedes the name.
